We’re so excited to share Chai Coffee with you. What exactly is chai coffee? It’s our tongue-in-cheek take on a dirty chai (chai with a shot of espresso added to it), but a version that uses beautiful and simple ingredients and is easy to brew at home. Think masala coffee!

Backstory
For this blend, we teamed up with So-Cal roaster, Yes Plz Coffee. While working on R&D for this blend (which included cupping lots of yummy coffees), Yes Plz’s co-founder Sumi and I realized that besides both being South Asian, we also happened to grow up in the same neighborhood and community in the Atlanta suburbs! We also talked a lot about our relationships with chai and coffee respectively.
While I grew up in a house where chai was consumed regularly and my introduction to coffee didn’t happen until later on in life, Sumi comes from a big coffee family – his family owned a Dunkin’ Donuts and he grew up mostly drinking coffee! In our conversations, we became drawn to the ways our brands represent an interesting clash of cultures we see mirrored in our lives: chai represents our South Asianness, while coffee feels like a reflection of our American identities. Like many people from the South Asian diaspora today, Sumi and I have both felt the push-pull of embracing our “ethnic” culture and wanting to assimilate, and the constant battle to strike a balance. We realized that, in reality, we’re never just one or the other. Like a dirty chai latte, we’re a hot (or cold!) little mix of both. This drink is our homage to two parts of our lives we love. And while “chai tea” still means “tea tea latte,” you have our permission to call this drink a Chai Coffee 🙂
